The Bauhaus Movement

The Bauhaus movement of art and architecture goes back to its origin to the controversial school of art and crafts established in the year 1902 in Weimar. At that time, another art school founded in 1860 was also creating a lot of disputes in the society. The leading architect Walter Gropius took the initiative of combining these two schools of thought into a Staatliches Bauhaus on 1st of April in the year 1919.

The basic idea of the Bauhaus movement was based on certain philosophies. Their basic teaching was based on productive workshops. It is for this reason, it contained a carpenter’s workshop, a pottery, a metal workshop and also offering facilities for painting on glass, weaving, printing and also stone and wood sculpting. The Bauhaus movement showed the functional aspect of the design and it was very much against the Gothic architecture of Germany.

The Bauhaus was based on the belief that a machine economy can deliver wonderfully designed artistic items for the masses. The materials used can be steel, concrete, chrome, glass and many more. The movement started in 1919 and it was terminated by the Nazis in the year 1933. The Bauhaus architects were chased out of the town by the right wing activists in and around the year 1930’s. The eminent teachers of this movement include Paul Klee, Oskar Schlemmer, Joseph Albers and many more.

Walter Gropius gave the name Bauhaus as an inversion of the Hausbau, which in English means “house construction.” They wanted to show that if you want to plan and implement some home improvements, then it can done quite easily by the ordinarily available practical materials. As these ideas and materials used are quite cheap, hence the idea was to produce these things for the masses.

If you want to make some beautiful garden lighting in and around the area of your house, you must concentrate more on the design part of it. Pieces with wonderful design made from simple materials can be used for outdoor lighting in the area around your house. If you can make some home improvement ideas using Bauhaus concept, you can see that the entire concept can be implemented quite economically and the people will really start appreciating your design.

The Bauhaus is still now considered as one of the most important Design movements of the twentieth century. The concept of Bauhaus is very much present in making of modern day furniture when we talk about objects that will cater to both the purpose and artistic beauty of it. The basic reason for which the Bauhaus movement started by Walter Gropius gained momentum and is practiced even today is that it tried to unify art, craft and the technology.
