South Africa’s Soundproof World Cup Stadium

Not only does the Cape Town stadium look magnificent, its design has an ace up its sleeve. Like no other stadium in the world, you’d literally not be able to hear any noise coming out of the stadium from the cheers and jeers of supporters during the matches because this is literally a soundproof stadium.

This concept of soundproofing was put into consideration due to nearby neighbourhoods voicing their concerns over the decibel levels during the world cup. German engineering firm Schlaich Bergermann was tasked to come up with a solution and boy did they come up with something elegant.

Here’s how the soundproofing works

The roof of the stadium is made up of 4,700 tons or 9,000 half inch thick glass panels held together by 72 radial steel cables. The total area covered by glass is 398,265-square-foot. A teflon mesh sits underneath the glass roof. One can only imagine the noise levels inside the stadium to be amplified as the noise is deflected off the roof.

The roof is constructed in a convex shape to cater for the windy conditions of the area and redirects the gusts of wind into the stadium. A pretty brilliant concept for what should be a brilliant world cup!

It would be very very noisy inside the stadium imo.

wow, its breathtaking, not interested in the engineering part of it though. But will love to be a part of that noise(making the noise).

spectacular design… I love black and white color. I’ve been thinking what it would be like, if the exterior of the stadium is retro black and white. About the soundproof, It’s not the crowd cheering that the neighbours are worried about, it’s the blowing on their vuvu’s from begining till the end of the game.

speaking of vuvus, i just read that 90% of all vuvuzelas sold in south africa are made in China! amazing

@ Adrian How, Yes..That incessant drone that sounds like a swarm of bees crossed with elephants are made in China.
For the world Cup They have made millions of them for about 30 cents apiece. When sounded by hundreds of thousands of soccer fans, has irritated people the world over
