Siller Stairs – Interview with Benjamin Friedl

Siller Stairs is one of Italy’s foremost stairs designers. My previous post showcased Siller’s impressive work done around the world. Here’s an interview I did with the guy behind Siller Stairs himself – Benjamin Friedl.

Me: Tell us about the origins of Siller Stairs/Treppen

Benjamin: The company was founded in 1958 and by a traditional carpenter. Mr. Siller Senior only manufactured custom made staircases primarily using wood during the winter time. In 1990, Christian Siller (Junior) decided it was time to expand the business and concentrate on professional stairs. His aim was to create light and floating stairs to be viewed as accompaniments to living spaces, just like any other furniture. Today, the main materials used are wood, stainless steel and glass. Since 2000,  Siller Stairs has gone international and the are now sold in Germany, Austria, Spain, UK, USA and Canada.

Me: In your opinion, what differentiates Siller from its competitors? and how does Siller plan to continue to maintain the edge in an ever competitive industry?

Siller Stairs – Modern Sexy Stairs

Siller stairs is one of Italy’s foremost stairs designer and manucfacturer with over 50 years rich experience in the industry. They utilize a wide range of materials from wood, glass, acryllic, steel and stone. With state of the art technology, they are able to custom make most any type of stairs, limited only by the imagination of their customers. I’ve always had a thing for glass stairs – something about them spells sexy to me and I am mightily impressed with Siller’s showcase of stairs, especially their glass stairs offerings

I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Benjamin Friedl of Siller stairs and he has graciously decided to share samples of his works here on How’sHouse. Enjoy (next up: an interview with Benjamin himself – stay tuned for that)

Stilsucht’s Sixpack

Form meets functionality in Danish design house Stilsucht’s Sixpack – an ultra modern bottle carrier that can hold up to 6 bottles of beer, soft drinks, or even water. I simply adore clever yet simple designs and the Sixpack is no exception. In fact, it has a real touch of elegance to it as well. Go to a party in style and present the drinks you’ve brought for your guest this way and you’re sure to stir up conversation about the Sixpack.

Simply brilliant. This really has the potential to end up being a classic. As a standalone object, I’m not sure many people will ever guess its true functionality but I’m certain that when do find out, they would be mightily impressed.

Gary Neville’s Eco Home

Manchester United captain, Gary Neville, has recently just submitted plans to the city council for a carbon-free eco home within his estate. The entire house lives up to its carbon-free tag by being powered and sustained on a wind turbine. The plans for this home is said to be so advanced that the authorities might just use it as a blueprint for future carbon-free homes.

Despite now being well known for his lack of respect for scousers and the blue side of Manchester (specifically Carlos Tevez), the little United stalwart obviously has tremendous respect for mother earth and is doing his part to minimize his carbon footprint. It would be strange to call him a role model (no parent would teach their kids to gesture like Mr Neville… read about that here) but from a Green/Eco perspective, I think a lot of people could really look up to him and what he’s trying to do.

Of course, having deep pockets really eases the cause. Then again, we don’t see all the celebs and footballers digging in to buy electric cars or building eco homes. Commendable, Mr Neville.

Fun fact: The Neville brothers dad’s name is Neville Neville.

Chez Larsson’s Super Simple Frame

I like this – for its simplicity and the resourcefulness when going out to spend money to buy a frame wasn’t an option. In this case, scarcity became the mother of invention. If you think about it, humans have always been able to do a lot with very little and chezlarsson is no different in this case.

Here’s what some imagination, perspex and some clips can do

Eames Rocker RAR

The famed Eames Rocker RAR (Rocker Armchair Rod), designed by Charles and Ray-Bernice Eames in 1948 is just another one of those iconic designer chairs that have withstood the test of time and are heralded up there with the likes of the Panton Chair and the Barcelona Chair.

The rocker features a polypropelene shell with a metal wire base running from the bottom of the shell, finally joining a pair of wooden runners. The marriage of wood, metal and plastic simply meld together harmoniously to produce a timeless piece of furniture that will never lose its appeal over generations.

Here’s a picture of a stunning chair and equally beautiful baby Eleanor from makingitlovely.com
