Valerie Choi’s Prediction on Interior Design Trends for 2010

In a recent article posted on TheStar, Valerie Choi, the Art Director of ID Benchmark Sdn. Bhd., speaks about her predictions for upcoming trends in 2010.

Ageless Curve – she predicts that vintage baroque will be big in 2010, with emphasis on monochrome wallpapers with bold baroque designs. I personally like the baroque patterns and am seeing more and more bold choices in modern homes which incorporate these designs. The thing I’d highlight here is how easy it is to get carried away and overdo it without realising. As Valerie points out, first decide on the wall. She goes on to add that you can add in pendant lights as accents to the bring out the bold curves of your newly decorated wall

Mother Earth – as green living becomes a more pronounced concept in many new homes, living in harmony with nature or natural elements will be the in thing in 2010. A great way to achieve this simply is to use earthly colours for your walls, leverage on natural or recycle elements as decor to your home e.g. a wooden log. My thoughts are aligned with Valerie’s on this theme because I get a lot of people asking me for advice on how they can make their homes more green. My first answer to them is to make use of two of nature’s free and abundant resources – wind and light. Go for as much natural lighting and utilize wind to create a breezy environment. Not only are you saving mother earth, you’re also saving dollars and cents in the process.

Let’s Play – Valerie feels that the brighter and bolder the colours, the better! In my opinion, many are often fearful of not getting the right mix of colours to produce the results they desire. If that fear is apparent, don’t start with walls or permanent fixtures. Play with bold colours on your accents and ornamental items. These are movables which you can easily swap around in your home to blend in or stand out.

Oriental Sweetness – designs inspired by the East. We are very fortunate to live in a culturally diverse part of the world and with the right mix, one could achieve marvelous results within a modern home. You could mix a contemporary home with Balinese woodcraft and furniture or Chinese antiques in a western rustic themed home. Your imagination is the only thing that limits the possibilities. Think out of the box and enjoy the beauty that you can create from it.

I think Valerie’s pretty much spot on with what we’re going to see emerge or further emphasized in 2010. I’ve really just given my thoughts on each of her key highlights so I’d advice you to read her article published in TheStar online yourself.
