The Barcelona Chair

Seen in many modern homes and office spaces, the Barcelona Chair is indeed an ageless icon in the world of product design. Created by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe of the Bauhaus movement, this chair was first introduced to the world at the Ibero-American Exposition in 1929 which was held in Barcelona.

Like Verner Panton’s iconic Panton Chair, the Barcelona Chair has withstood the test of time and impresses as a futuristic design to many who are unaware of its origins. Like any iconic product design, it has not evolved to become a better product – it already is one.

Today, you can find replicas of this elegant chair in many furniture outlets around town. One of the better quality ones available locally can be found at Ofitalia, Rozel’s office furniture arm (there’s one in TTDI, the row of shops in front of Plaza TTDI, opposite the Caltex station). The chair and stool set retails for RM3,290. I must admit, the price is steep but I was impressed with the build quality.

The Barcelona chair will indeed be an elegant addition in any contemporary home. Having withstood the test of time, I’m certain it’ll be around for a few more generations at the very least.
