Tiling Options
When it comes to tiles, the choices are aplenty. Having myriad choices creates a whole new headache – what type of tiles should I choose?
The most common tiles applied in many homes are ceramic tiles, which is essentially fired clay. They come in various shapes and sizes, colours, require low-maintenance and are extremely durable. Unglazed tiles have a matte finish and are usually susceptible to staining due to their porosity. Glazed tiles are coated with protective finish during the manufacturing process and are usually almost stain-resistant.

Modern ceramic tiles these days come in a wide variety of surface types – smooth, bevelled, rippled, uneven etc. I’ve seen floors that look like hardwood flooring only to realise upon closer inspection that they were in fact tiles made to look like wood.
Mosaics and leather tiles are getting more popular these days. I personally like the feel and finish of glass mosaics which are ideal for bathrooms, kitchens, and feature walls.
When going tile shopping, never be shy to take pictures, measurements of the tiles that interest you. Next, take the time to envision the final outcome – this should give you a clearer picture of which tile suits you best. It’s not uncommon to spend hours at the tile store.

Sometimes, it pays to mix and match. A good example is to use different tiles as accents or borders.
A good place to start tile shopping is Apex Ceramics City at Jalan Ipoh
